Inspired by Valentine’s Day, I made a simple heart-shaped cake decorated with raspberries and sliced strawberries. It took very little time but enabled a plain white cake to take center stage. Even if you lack cake-decorating know-how, you can make a beautiful and festive cake with minimal ingredients and a little bit of imagination.
How to make the heart shape
You do not need a heart-shaped pan. The heart here was created with one 8×8-inch square cake and one 8-inch-diameter round cake. Cut the round cake in half and place the semi-circles on two adjacent sides of the square. Voila, a heart. I made a two-layer cake, so I made two square cakes and two round cakes.
Use white cake mix and store-bought white frosting, or if you have the time and inclination you can make your own. To make the segments of the heart come out at even heights, prepare the cake mix and pour the batter evenly into the round and square pans.
Decorating with the berries
I filled the center layer with frosting and a layer of strawberries. Once the cake was fully frosted, I began layering strawberries and raspberries. I followed the heart theme, alternating the fruit and creating what reminded me of a floral pattern, like a flower blossoming.
